Kilauea Real Estate Highlights
Kilauea is in the desolate and isolated region of Northern Kauai—an area which has some of the most spectacular views of the natural beauty of the island. Moments away from active volcanoes, beautiful bays, and almost untouched lowland wet forests, Kilauea homes for sale are perfect for those who want to be at one with nature and enjoy a peaceful and quiet life.
Nicknamed the Guava Capital of the World, Kilauea is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. This community offers some of the island’s best snorkeling, diving, hiking, kayaking and Kauai’s favorite, surfing. Kilauea Point is home to the Kilauea Lighthouse, a guiding light for mariners.
The idyllic town has all of the amenities one would need. Some of Kilauea's conveniences include:
- Farmers markets
- Medical centers
- Fish markets
- Restaurants & retail stores
This charming community is a melting pot of cultures and Kilauea homes are never on the market for long!
The Kilauea Ecosystem
Just outside the door of the homes for sale in Kilauea—especially in the Southern part of the community--there’s an ecosystem that is determined by the Hawai’I Volcanoes National Park. A’e ferns, ‘ohi’a trees, and Cibotium are abundant, as are birds such as the ‘apapane and the ‘I’iwi—which are honeycreepers with sweet calls, and the Hawai’ian goose, the nene.
One area of Kilauea to avoid is the southwestern rift zone, an area which is also known as the Ka’u Desert. The reason to steer clear of this area is due to the 39 inches of precipitation per year in the area mixes with the Sulphur off-gassing from the active volcanoes, a combination which forms acid rain and leaves the area on the verge of having no regional plant growth.
The northern lowland west forests of Kilauea are protected by the Puna Forest Reserve and the Natural Area Reserve of Kahauale’a, Wao Kele is the largest lowland west forest reserve in all of Hawaii and is situated close to Puna on Kauai.
One of the things to be sure of when purchasing a home in Kilauea is that you have adequate protection from volcano damage on your insurance. Although most insurance policies in Hawaii will cover typical damages from a volcano, like the structure burning down or being destroyed by airborne shockwaves, you should also consider purchasing other insurance, such as earthquake insurance, as the movement of your home caused by volcanic earthquakes would not be covered under traditional volcano insurance options.
