Ohi'a'lehua

 Latin Name: Metrosideros polymorpha

Family: Myrtle (Myrtaceae)

Location: Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast

Native to: Hawaii

Fun Facts: A favorite plant of the volcano (and fire) goddess Pele, and as such it is one of the first plants to establish itself on volcanic rocks.  There are five types of ohia lehua in Hawaii that can be distinguished by whether their leaves have petioles or form rosettes (this one has very small or no petioles and forms rosettes) and also some have rounded leaves.  The leaf arrangementcan more accurately be called distichous, a sequentially perpendicular arrangement of opposite pairs.  The tightness of the arrangement…

Fun Facts: Ornamental ginger is not edible like the related culinary ginger roots. Much more beautiful than in the photo, it has several varieties including "jungle king" (red), "jungle queen" (pink), hot pink, purest white, and so on. It spreads like a weed once established and was brought to Hawaii at least by 1928. It is similar to the heliconias in that they have these colorful bracts that look like flowers, but the actual flowers are white and…

Fun Facts: This is the largest tree-born fruit, getting as big as 35 kg and each tree can produce 100-200 fruit in a year.  Tree gets up to 70 ft tall and both fruit and seeds are edible.

St Regis - A Princeville Resort and One of the Best Places to Watch the Sunset on Kauai!

When you live in Princeville, it's fun to go down to the St Regis! 

There's so much to do, see, eat, and hear at the St. Regis...it's one of my favorite places!

I was first introduced to the St. Regis in Princeville by walking down their beach on my morning walks.  Every beach in Hawaii is a public beach, and I would take the Princeville walking path down to the St Regis, and then the stairs next to the St. Regis to the beach. Early in the morning, I am usually one of very few people on the beach.  I love walking down there in the summer when the water is calm and glassy and looking at the views over the bay.

Chinese Chicken Salad and so much more...at the Kukui'ula Club House

There I am enjoying my day relaxing in paradise at Kukui'ula's Plantation house with my friend Erica.  I'm sure you know how laying in the sun all day taking it easy can really make you have an appetite! ;)

Lunch at Kukui'ula's Club house is generally served by the Makai pool, but I was told that there would bring it anywhere we wanted it (VIP treatment). The menu had a lot of fun local favorites, and a few things for every type of appetite.  I had the Chinese Chicken Salad...yummy, and the perfect lunch item if your trying to stay bathing suit ready at all times (if you know what I mean).
